Rise of the Planet of the Apes (USA, 2011)

I like monkeys do you ? Well "they're not monkeys they are apes".
Never the less I think most people have a soft spot for our primate not-so-distant cousins, even if they do mean to imprison us and take over our world, in fact that is the very premise this film tempts to draw you in with, exactly how did they do it ?

Now I'll start by saying I am not a fan of the previous movies, I don't know exactly what it is that intrigues people to this film or the series of films it is based upon. Maybe it is our curious obsession with just how closely apes resemble humans and quite how much they could mess the planet & us if they took control. I am sure they would do a fine job actually myself, just like the makers of this film do in fact. My point is you don't have to be a fan of the films or even science fiction to like this, just press play and enjoy the ride, it is superbly paced (what I like to call a "time-shuttle") and well acted and you will stare at CG monkeys (sorry, apes) like a wide-eyed child.

This is the finest thing to come out of modern hollywood since ... oh those Batman movies I suppose, a must see !

+ points: Caesar has the coolest expressions !
- points: why exactly is Franco smiling at the end ?
